Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhydrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Excessive sweating can be embarrassing, socially crippling and a day to day struggle. The answer is here with medical Botox (Botulinumtoxin A) for Hyperhidrosis.

Research demonstrates that treating excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet, and other relatively small body areas (like under the breasts) with Botulium is safe and effective. When used to treat underarm excessive sweating, Botulium has been shown to result in an 82-87% decrease in sweating. Results start to be noticeable approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment with the full effects usually noted within 2 weeks. Dryness typically lasts 4 to 12 months but some studies have found it can last as long as 14 months.

Botulium works by blocking the secretion of the chemical that activates sweat glands.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. In some cases, problematic sweating is limited to one area of the body, such as the underarms or feet, a condition called focal hyperhidrosis. Other cases are more generalized, with sweating over large areas of the body. The most common areas affected by hyperhidrosis are the scalp, underarms, hands, feet and groin area.

“Excessive sweating can significantly affect a person’s life. It can be embarrassing and socially isolating, and many people find the condition quite upsetting.”

How does Botulinum work for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)?

Botulinum is injected into the skin in the areas affected by excessive sweating – most commonly under arms and on the forehead and scalp. Botulinum blocks the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. Retreatment is typically needed in four to six months, as the nerves regenerate. Over time, however, patients can go longer between treatments.

It’s important to be evaluated by a provider for excessive sweating, because there are a few other rare, serious conditions that can also cause excessive sweating symptoms. Patients may also want to consider other options, like clinical-strength antiperspirant, before resorting to Botulinum.

How is Hyperhidrosis treatment performed?

Using a starch iodine test to locate the area, we draw a small graph and then inject tiny amounts of Botulinum very superficially into the skin of the affected area, most clients find it uncomfortable but not painful.

How long do the effects of medical Botulinum for Hyperhidrosis last?

Results start to be noticeable approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment with the full effects usually noted within 2 weeks. Dryness typically lasts 4 to 12 months but some studies have found it can last as long as 14 months.
